TTA report

Nothing much happened in the first half and things only improved marginally in the 2nd. Queens went close with a glancing header (56). Elliot came on as sub and made an early impact and with both teams going flat out for a winner, Fox had a fine save before Elliot, Erskine and Paton all missed late chances.

A training ground injury prevented Ryan Scully continuing goal for this trip to Dumfries to face Queen of the South meaning a return in goal for Scott Fox. There was one further change to the Thistle starting eleven with Tommy Stewart preferred to Christie Elliott while on the bench Scott Robertson returned after being injured against Ayr United in September.

The Palmerston pitch was stodgy at that perhaps contributed to a first 45 minutes that is best forgotten. Neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in a half almost bereft of chances. Thistle’s best opportunity coming in the 16th minute when Tommy Stewart, looking for a goal on his return to the starting eleven, collected a through ball from David Rowson before chipping a shot past Robinson but also over the bar. At the other end a Scott McLaughlin shot clipped the outside of Scott Fox’s post on its’ way wide and that, being truthful, was pretty much it for the first half with neither side able to take advantage of a number corner kicks.

The early stages of the second half brought little improvement although in the 55th minute Scott Fox had to make his first save of note when he saved a Kevin Holt effort with his feet. The Thistle keeper was beaten, however, the very next minute but with Fox motionless Chris Higgins’ glancing header went wide of goal when most expected to see it nestle in the corner of the net. Encouraged by those near things the home side continued to press and Stephen McKenna was just off target with a well struck shot from just outside the Thistle box. In the 67th minute Thistle introduced Christie Elliott to the fray when he came on for Kris Doolan and Elliot’s first involvement in the game. Having been on the park for less than a minute, was to force Lee Robinson into a save low to his right with a shot from the edge of the box. Thistle were looking livelier at this stage and Tommy Stewart’s sharp turn at the corner of the box gave him a shooting opportunity but his effort was a foot or so over the bar. With the game more open than at any stage in the match in the 77th minute only the fingertips of Scott Fox kept the game tied at 0-0 with an excellent save to deny Queens sub Tom Brighton a goal. That was the closest that Queens would come to a goal but in a frantic closing five minutes with both teams going flat out for a winner Thistle three times came close to snatching a win. Christie Elliott tried to clip one in from a tight angle after a Hutton shot had been partially blocked and Chris Erskine saw his shot from 8 yards out deflected over the bar. The best chance of them all came in injury time. Paul Paton sent over a cross from the right that Christie Elliott was able to connect with but his shot was too high.
