Thistle ignored Cowdenbeath's second bottom status and had most of the play but it was a case of good goalkeeping, bad luck and bad finishing. The only goal came early in the second half when a long ball caught out Robertson and was shot home past the advancing Fox (50). Late pressure came to nothing.

Given the excellent performance in defeating Raith Rovers in the last fixture seven days ago it was hardly surprise that Ian McCall selected the same team, right down to the choice of five substitutes, for the visit of Cowdenbeath.

Thistle were the first of the two teams to threaten a goal. An excellent through ball from Paul Paton was collected by Martin Grehan but he couldn’t pick out the waiting David Rowson with his cross. Thistle though kept the pressure on and a Paddy Boyle shot was blocked at the expense of a corner before Kris Doolan hooked a shot over the bar. It continued to be Thistle that did all the pressing with in the opening 20 minutes Cowdenbeath rarely venturing outside their own half. For all Thistle’s pressure though they were unable to create a clear cut scoring opportunity although in the 21st minute Kris Doolan was just about a foot off target with a shot from just outside the box. At the other end Scott Fox had a rare moment of action when he was required to be well positioned to save a well struck Mark Ramsay effort. Thistle were close to the opening goal that their domination in terms of possession merited in the 27th minute. Paul Paton’s corner from the left hand side was met by the head of Ryan McGowan who was a little unlucky to see his header fall right into the waiting arms of David hay. Thistle though were close to falling behind in the 28th minute and would have done so not for the intervention of Scott Fox. A quick Cowdenbeath break had the Thistle defence under pressure and when Robertson couldn’t clear at the edge of the box Greig Stewart’s shot looked destined for the back of the net until Fox twisted his body and tipped the ball over the bar. In the 32nd minute it was Thistle’s turn to come close to scoring. Thistle initially were unable to force the ball home from close range after Vauls had made a mess of a clearance but when the ball was touched back into the path of Ryan McGowan it took a fine save from Hay to keep the ball out the net. There was another near thing in front of the Cowdenbeath goal in the 37th minute. Martin Grehan was given a clear sight of goal inside the Cowdenbeath box but his shot was a poor one and Hay was able to make an easy save.

After the first half had finished without a goal Thistle had a strong appeal for a penalty turned down two minutes into the second half when Paul Paton hit the deck a yard or so inside the Cowdenbeath box. It was the visitors though that took the lead a short time later. A long ball forward caught the Thistle defence out with Greig Stewart the man to profit as Thistle couldn’t clear, knocking the ball past Scott Fox and into the corner of the net. Such were Thistle’s poor efforts at getting back into this game that all three substitutes were committed by the 65th minute as Thistle struggled to come anywhere near replicating the form from Stark’s Park seven days previously. Thistle hadn’t forced Hay in the Cowdenbeath goal into a single save second half but in contrast in the 77th minute Cowdenbeath nearly extended their lead with Fox making a decent block from Kyle Miller. It took Thistle until the 90th minute for Thistle to manage a second half shot on goal with Shaun Fraser’s effort blocked inside the six yard box.
