Poor marking led to Thistle trailing (2). A header by Doolan made it 1-1 (14) but it was 2-1 (27) then a pen (foul in/out the box, 30) made it 3-1. The defence was torn apart for No 4 (65) before Doolan got his 2nd 12 minutes from time. A miserable afternoon. Back to the bottom. “Bitterly disappointing” (McCall).

Following victory against Falkirk seven days earlier manager Ian McCall fielded an unchanged side right down to the choice of five substitutes for the trip to Stirling Albion but in a dismal opening 45 minutes that’s where the familiarity ended.

In recent weeks Thistle have started matches well but in this game they found themselves trailing after just 90 seconds of action. A cross from the left hand side being headed home by an unmarked Gordon Smith inside the Thistle six yard box. Smith, who scored the winning goal the last time the two teams met, again indicated the danger he posed when he was able to get his head to a long throw into the Thistle box but on this occasion his header slipped wide of the far post. Thistle were labouring at this stage but they were able to get themselves back on level terms in the 14th minute. With iain Flannigan’s delivery of the ball into the box good of late Thistle have looked a threat at set plays and it was Flannigan corner that lead to the equaliser. Kris Doolan’s taking advantage of slack marking and his downward header found the net. If we thought that that equaliser had Thistle back on the right track then we were in for a disappointment as the next goal came at the other end. Thistle’s defending at a corner was poor and although Halliwell was able to make an initial save from Andy Gibson he couldn’t hold the ball and Gordon Smith was left with the easy task of knocking the ball over the line for his and Stirling’s second goal of the game. Worse was to follow for Thistle just two minutes later. Halliwell misjudged a through ball and when Gordon Smith went to gather the ball he was tugged back right on the edge of the box. Referee Allan adjudged the foul to have taken place inside the box. Halliwell may have considered himself lucky to collect only a yellow card but there his good fortune ended as Chris Aitken slammed the ball home. While Stirling didn’t add to their score before the interval things continued to go from bad to worse for Thistle. Alan Archibald was replaced by Liam Buchanan with Archibald immediately receiving intensive treatment in the dugout. If that injury blow wasn’t enough Thistle suffered another one with the half-time whistle approaching. Willie Kinniburgh’s afternoon of action ending on a stretcher as a miserable first 45 minutes ended with Thistle in some disarray.

Thistle started the second half with Chris Erskine on for Paul Cairney but the half’s first chance came the way of the home side. Or rather, was presented to them. More defensive errors gifted Ryan Borris a glorious opportunity which inexplicably he was unable to take. Thistle were pressing but at a time when had Thistle scored to reduce the leeway it might have been game on, Stirling tore Thistle apart with the goal of the game in the 65th minute. Borris crossed from the left, with Smith’s nice touch setting up Chris Aitken who smashed the ball high into the roof of the net. Thistle were given a touch of hope in the 78th minute when Kris Doolan produced a finish not in keeping with the overall quality of the Thistle performance. With three minutes remaining Thistle were given the chance of putting a little extra pressure on Stirling when Martin Hardie was fouled right on the edge of the Stirling box directly in front of goal. Iain Flannigan’s effort though was a poor one as he sent the ball over the bar.
