Hinchliffe had a tremendous debut in goal. Buchanan scored off a post (11) then chances to extend the lead were wasted. Queens were the better side for much of the second half and came close to equalising but thanks to Hinchliffe it remained 1-0 until McKinlay scored with a header from a corner (81).

LIAM BUCHANAN set Partick Thistle on their way to victory before Craig Hinchliffe’s stunning saves stole his thunder. Buchanan opened the scoring in the 11th minute after picking up a Mark Roberts lay-on and rifling his shot in off the inside of the near post. Jamie McQuilken almost blundered for the Doonhamers by letting in Buchanan with a header, but Queen’s keeper Jamie McDonald stopped it well. David Rowson was unlucky to see his 25-yard thunderbolt zip wide following a neat Buchanan ball. Then Stephen Dobbie jinked past two Jags defenders after the break to play in O’Connor, but the Queens hitman took an extra touch, allowing Hinchliffe to save. The Jags keeper was on top form after O’Connor turned Jimmy Gibson, as his prodded effort was gratefully blocked. Jim Thomson followed up with a bullet header, then O’Connor’s looping header forced Hinchliffe into a wonderful fingertip save. Partick sub Kevin McKinlay should have killed the game off when Simon Donnelly swept the ball in, but the Jags man somehow put it wide. He made amends on 81 minutes when Paul Keegan’s corner from the right found the big striker and he powerfully headed home. Buchanan should have scored a flattering third when he latched onto a long ball, but he blazed his effort over.
