Simon Storey, Mark Innes and two others played as trialists for Thistle. Trialist 6, an unknown first timer, came off late in the game, replaced by U-19 prospect Michael Robertson. Trialist 13 came on for Liam Buchanan midway through the second half. Looks like the 5th French mystery man of the close season. ET pre-match stated: “Jags must be quick to grab French fancy. PARTICK THISTLE are in a race against time to field a mystery French strike trialist against Albion Rovers at Cliftonhill tonight. It is understood that the player's appearance will depend on flight connections and registration clearance fitting in with a time scale that will allow the frontman to join up with the Jags before they depart for Coatbridge. The Frenchman could be part of a batch of as many as four new trialists in a fringe Thistle team that will have assistant boss Gardner Speirs in charge.”

2 goals by Buchanan in the first 3 minutes settled things. He was a constant threat and he could easily have had 4. He scored from a poorly cleared Strachan free-kick then he charged down a clearance to score from an acute angle. But for the Rovers keeper the score would have been more convincing.

Two goals from Liam Buchanan inside the game's first 3 minutes were enough to see Thistle record their second pre-season win. Although Thistle didn't add to their tally the winning margin, after an impressive first half display, could have been much greater. Stand-in 'gaffer' Gardner Speirs selected three, brand new, trialists in his starting eleven with a further trialist on the bench. The game was essentially won inside 5 first half minutes. The first goal arrived after barely go seconds. An Adam Strachan free kick wasn't cleared and Liam Buchanan's effort was adjudged to have crossed the line. In next to no time Buchanan and Thistle had a second goal. Buchanan did well to charge down an attempted clearance from Scott in the Rovers goal and never gave up after it looked as if the chance had been lost eventually rolling the ball into the net from a tight angle.

At this point thoughts started to wonder to the quickest ever hat-trick and in the 18th minute Buchanan was given an opportunity to net his third goal. Collecting a defence splitting through ball Buchanan was left with only the keeper to beat. Scott though was able to save with a defender on hand to clear the loose ball from the goal line. Buchanan came close again in the 22nd minute. He was tackled in the act of shooting but when the ball broke into his path again he was a little unfortunate to see his shot deflected wide of goal. From the corner that followed Ryan McStay saw his header clear the bar. The chances continued to come Thistle's way. Rovers' keeper Scott may have blundered at the second goal but he produced a string of fine saves to keep the score at 2-0. He twice denied Adam Strachan, saved again from Liam Buchanan and touched a Stevie Murray shot from 25 yards round the post for a corner. He was, however, beaten in the 40th minute but ex-Albion Rovers player Scott Chaplain shot after bursting clear of the defence was off target.

Thistle lacked the same cutting edge in the second half but were still dominant. Only very rarely were Rovers able to threaten the Thistle defence with Gordon Lennon a rock in the centre of the Thistle defence. The action was mainly in front of the Rovers goal. Ryan McStay had a shot saved in the 47th minute and with 20 minutes left nearly scored a memorable goal. After showing excellent close control he sent a 30 yard effort only narrowly wide of target. Liam Buchanan, who was a constant threat up front, came close again to sealing his hat-trick in the 55th minute and Scott Chaplain came close in the 65th minute after being set up by Adam Strachan. In the closing stages of the game Thistle took the opportunity to introduce under 19 players Charles Samushonga, Michael Robertson, and Jay Montgomery and they joined team mate Callum Sellars who had replaced Stevie Murray earlier in the half.
