Relegation avoided. Strachan put Thistle 1-up (17) from close in but it was 1-1 soon after through ex-JAG Lyle but Young scored the winner with a cool finish (53). The other highlight/delight was that for the 2nd time this season Rae was sent off (2nd yellow) having “enjoyed“88 minutes of constant verbal abuse.

BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG; Houdini Jags Are Safe - but How Will They Avoid New Drop Fight Next Year? MANY older fans still refer to them as the Harry Wraggs but in light of the Jags' recent escapades, another Harry springs to mind - Houdini. He was pretty good at getting out of tricky situations by the skin of his teeth and, let's face it, Thistle know a thing or three about the old escapology business. Let there be no doubts about that now they've wriggled free of the dreaded play-offs and possible relegation back to the deep, dark waters of the Second Division. Like Houdini, they left it late but the win over Dundee at Firhill was enough to guarantee a place in the First Division next season. Which is all very well but, hey, unless the Firhill board get their thinking caps on over the summer their team might have to do another Houdini act next term. New and better players must be brought in but to do that you need money and by all accounts Partick don't have much of that. One way they might get it is if there's asuccessful takeover bid. In the match programme, chairman Allan Cowan said: “We have received a number of enquiries from various parties.” Yippee, could this be the start of something big for the Jags? Maybe, but it's probably best not to hold your breath. And here's another conundrum - who will manage the team after Dick Campbell was unceremoniously, and unfairly, dumped? Will it be temporary boss Jimmy Bone or will it be Terry Butcher? Word has it that it's a done deal and the big English fella will be handed the reins. But who knows?

Those of us who were at Firhill do know Thistle deserved their three valuable points. Goals from Adam Strachan and Derek Young in 17 and 53 minutes respectively were enough to secure the victory, despite Derek Lyle's 22nd-minute strike for Dundee. Throughout it all, the Jags punters roared themselves hoarse while the Dundee fans were as noisy as a flock of butterflies. Maybe they're cheesed off with their under-achieving lot.

It wasn't a good day for the tame Tayside troops but it was an even worse one for player-boss Alex Rae, ordered off in the last minute for a rash tackle on Jimmy Gibson. Apart from kicking people, Rae leads by example on the park but his players can't take a hint, so maybe his misdemeanour was the result of frustration.

Jags' sub keeper Kenny Arthur, their longest-serving player, knows all about frustration. Stuck on the bench since Jonny Tuffey replaced him as No.1, Arthur said: “Having to sit and watch your team battling for survival is a nightmare. But that's football for you. There are no guarantees and you have to learn to live with that. However, this isn't about me. The most important thing is we have survived and that's always been our aim this season.”

Fair point but toss this around the old brainbox - why is it that a club with the potential of Partick Thistle generally fail to punch their weight? Some might suggest the directors don't really have the nous to run a properly functioning football club. Then again, maybe their hands are tied. Get out of that one.
