A comfortable win that should have been by a bigger margin. Arthur had a fine save to deny Alloa before Donnelly side-footed in a Brady cross (12) then Sives doubled the lead (14). Thistle were well on top and McConalogue and Donnelly both hit the post. Gibson and Sives completed the scoring late on (67 and 83).

DICK'S MEN UP FOUR THE CHALLENGE. PARTICK gaffer Dick Campbell last night claimed his side were ready for life in Division One after his new boys ran riot. Goals from summer signing Simon Donnelly and loan star Craig Sives put Alloa on the ropes with Willie Gibson also getting on the scoresheet. And Campbell reckons he's added quality to his promoted Thistle side for the battle ahead. He said: “We've added some pace and height and I'm really happy to see how things are working out. We went about our job against Alloa well with many good performances. Graham Gibson was a workhorse and Donnelly showed he is still an intelligent player. After leaving Dunfermline he could have moved to at least two Premier League sides but preferred to join us. He never hides, scored a great goal and could have had more. I was also pleased with Sives who is here on loan from Hearts. He is only 18 but is on a five-year contract with the Jambos and I'm delighted we will have him with us for a season.”

The Wasps threatened after just three minutes. Brian McColligan's midfield pass was knocked on by Rob Sloan to the overlapping Graeme Brown but his deep cross was swept clear by Marc Smyth before John Grant could finish the move. Six minutes later veteran Thistle keeper Kenny Arthur dived to the left to push Grant's 22-yard effort round the post. But Partick took the lead with a quick-fire double - Donnelly scoring with an excellent shot into the right corner in 12 minutes then defender Sives converting a Jim Gibson cross four minutes later. Alloa were under pressure and in 18 minutes Stephen McConalogue hit a post with a powerful 16-yard drive. Ross Hamilton and Brown had efforts for Alloa but Thistle were in control. Donnelly clipped the bar with a 16-yarder as the home defence found itself under pressure again. In 67 minutes Willie Gibson tapped in an easy third goal after Donnelly crossed from the right and youngster Sives piled on the agony seven minutes from time with his second goal of the afternoon.

Alloa assistant boss James Ward, who hopes to add two new players this week, said: “We were down to the bare bones with six regulars out injured. It was a big ask from our boys to be thrown in at the deep end. I thought Thistle performed really well and look like they are prepared for life in Division One.”
