False dawn! Thistle were second best in every department and the hungrier team won. 3rd top St Mirren's task was made easier after Mitchell's lunge (50) led to a converted pen. They showed Thistle how to counter-attack and 2 simple goals (62 and 84) emphasised their superiority, Thistle giving the ball away cheaply.

THREE 'N EASY FOR SIZZLING SAINTS. SUPER Saints boosted their hopes of mounting a real title challenge with a well-deserved victory. The Paisley side have slipped up recently with too many draws and it looked as if this one might go the same way after a dreadful first half. But a penalty by Brian McGinty early in the second period kick-started the game and the visitors added two more through Alan Russell and sub John O'Neill to kill off pathetic Thistle. Gus MacPherson freshened up Saints by bringing in midfielder Mark Crilly and striker Russell and dropping O'Neill and Ricky Gillies to the bench. Thistle started with on-loan Dundee United midfield player Andy McLaren as one of their substitutes.

The visitors had more of the play in the early stages without managing to trouble Kenny Arthur to any great extent. A lot of their attacks ended with a high cross into the box but with their main aerial threat Mixu Paatelainen still injured and watching from the sidelines it seemed a questionable tactic. It took 20 minutes for Thistle to mount a promising attack and it was sparked by some slack play from Crilly. Jamie Mitchell burst into the box but his attempted cross was cut out and a follow-up shot was blocked by Andy Millen. Saints were soon back at the other end and Russell got away from Andy Dowie before firing in a shot that was deflected wide by Grant Murray. From Simon Lappin's corner keeper Arthur dropped the ball but Thistle managed to scramble it clear before any damage could be done. In 23 minutes referee Stuart Dougal brought out his yellow card for the first time to punish a foul by the home side's Kenny Milne. Murray was on hand to block again after a good run and shot by the industrious McGinty. In 28 minutes Thistle almost gifted their opponents the lead when Adrian Madaschi headed a Lappin free-kick inches wide of his own goal. David Van Zanten caused Thistle a lot of problems with his overlapping runs down the right - and at times they weren't too fussy about how they stopped him. Both sets of fans grew frustrated at the lack of goalmouth action, but more so the home support. A succession of free-kicks did nothing to help the flow of the game although when McGinty collapsed in a heap during one Saints attack referee Dougal thought he was trying to con him and ordered the striker to get back to his feet. Thistle's Aussie defender Madaschi became the second booking for a rash challenge after 33 minutes. There was some excitement at last for Thistle five minutes later when Billy Gibson played a one-two with Juan Escalas and hit a shot that was deflected on to a post and wide. However it wasn't long before they were booing their players again as sloppy defending allowed Saints to win yet another corner. This time Lappin's delivery was headed off target by Kirk Broadfoot.

Thistle started the second half with a bit more verve and their first attack saw Leigh Hinds lay the ball off for Derek Fleming whose drive was blocked by Kevin McGowne. But the stalemate was broken at the other end from a penalty in 51 minutes. Defender Broadfoot burst into the box and was just about to reach the bye-line when Mitchell brought him down. Ref Dougal appeared to book Dowie for protesting before McGinty calmly stroked the ball home from the spot. Thistle's responded by sending on McLaren in place of Milne - but it was Saints who came close again when Mark Reilly had a fierce drive blocked. Lappin then tried a long-range shot but it sailed high over. The midfielder did better in Saints' next attack to get away from his marker and fire over a cross that Russell headed wide. Saints went two up in 64 minutes. An Andy Millen free kick was headed back across goal where Russell was waiting to sidefoot the ball home. Russell got clear again minutes later but after rounding Arthur his shot missed the target. With 20 minutes left Thistle sent on Armand One in place of Mitchell. McGinty was booked 60 seconds later for a foul on McLaren and was replaced by John Baird - who then missed a great chance for Thistle when he headed over from just a few yards out. Five minutes from time sub O'Neill, who had replaced Russell, took a pass from Reilly and shot a simple third.
