Airdrie went 2-up (the 2nd from O Coyle). Ex-JAG Hardie had a horrendous tackle on Dowie who was stretchered off. Madaschi's header made it 2-1 (43). Murray was red carded (tackle on Hardie) and Wilkinson followed (melee, both 51). Airdrie's 3rd (58) was followed by Escalas scoring (66) but Coyle got his 2nd (83).

AT INTERNATIONAL level we might be as entertaining as a one-armed juggle with the shakes but don't despair - we always have the First Division. Indeed, Airdrie and Partick Thistle put on a show that was pure theatre. It had drama, tragedy and a pinch of slapstick. Six goals, two red cards and plenty of meaty tackles - what more can a punter crave? It was a perfect Saturday afternoon. Maybe not for Thistle co-managers Derek Whyte and Gerry Britton, whose stewardship is being questioned, but what the hell, the game's bigger than them. This was the stuff men with big bunnets and a Woodbine dangling from their bottom lip used to watch before the game disappeared up it's own whatsit. With the tedium of the Berti Vogts saga to endure, it was an invigorating rub-down to a sagging spirit.

It wasn't pretty but it wasn't ugly either, just good old-fashioned entertainment your granda would have loved. Both sides went at it hell for leather in the nicest possible bone-crunching way. Unfortunately, however, Scotland under-21 international Andy Dowie had to be carried off in 37 minutes with a suspected broken leg courtesy of a Martin Hardie tackle. Hardie, a former Thistle player, was ambiguously repentant when he later said: “The adrenalin pumps that bit faster against your old team.”

His certainly was when his shot rattled the post in 35 minutes and Owen Coyle scored on the rebound. As soon as the net was ruffled, Hardie saluted the Jags punters with the sort of gesture you don't want your mammy to see. Hardie said: “I didn't mean to hurt Andy. I was just doing my job. Of course the Thistle fans gave me a lot of stick but I can live with that. We won, didn't we?”

Grant Murray, perhaps with vengeance in mind, was sent off after the break for an over-zealous tackle on Hardie. Team-mate Andy Wilkinson also earned an early bath for apparently shoving the ref. The Diamonds were 2-1 up at that time with goals from Marvyn Wilson and that Coyle strike. Adrian Madaschi had replied a minute before the break. Willie McLaren made it 3-1 against nine-man Thistle in 59 minutes and although Juan Escalas gave the Jags a glimmer of hope in 66 minutes, Coyle put the lights out six minutes from time. There are no frills with Coyle. He's the epitome of a good old-fashioned striker. The bunnets and Woodbine brigade would have taken to him.

Veteran Owen Coyle scored a double as Airdrie United defeated nine-man Partick Thistle. Marvin Wilson drilled home the opener for Airdrie before striker Coyle tapped in after Martin Hardy hit the post. Thistle's Adrian Madaschi headed in, but Grant Murray was sent off for a bad tackle and Andy Wilkinson followed for pushing referee Alan Freeland. Willy McLaren hit Airdrie's third and Juan Ramón Escales pouched one back for Thistle before Coyle swept home again.
