PARTICK THISTLE will step up their efforts to sign Andy Dowie after he impressed during their pre-season trip to Cyprus. ANDY DOWIE yesterday admitted he turned his back on the SPL because he loves the team spirit at Partick Thistle. The former Rangers defender signed a one-year deal with the Firhill outfit despite being offered a trial by Dundee United. Dowie, 21, impressed during Thistle's week-long training camp in Cyprus and co-managers Derek Whyte and Gerry Britton moved quickly to finalise the deal after learning of United's interest. Dowie has experience of the First Division, having been farmed out to Brechin last term, and he reckons Maryhill is the place to resurrect his career. He said: “I had a great time in Cyprus and the team spirit here is great. Derek and Gerry know when to have a laugh but they also know when you need to get your head down. When I was in Cyprus I wanted to sign and, even though Dundee United were interested, I believe I will be happy here. I just want to play first-team football and I hope I get the chance to do it here. And if that happens, hopefully I will get more caps for the Scotland Under-21s.” Britton believes Dowie will be an integral part of the team next season. However, it is unlikely Thistle will follow up their interest in Nigel Jemson and Australian Wayne Heath who were also on the trip. Jemson, Billy Gibson and Willie Howie scored in their 3-2 win over Paphos on Tuesday in the final match of their tour.
