Madaschi missed a free header from 10 yards but a 20-yard half volley by McBride after a corner (59) was enough to reward Thistle's “hurried and desperate” finishing. The nerves set in but Thistle hung on desperately to win.

THISTLE CLAIM FIRST VICTORY. A John Paul McBride goal gave bottom club Partick Thistle their first victory of the season. The Jags looked the hungrier and more determined side against a disappointing Motherwell, who seemed to lack the enthusiasm of recent weeks. The first half was a disappointing affair but just before the hour-mark, McBride drove a powerful shot from the edge of the box past Gordon Marshall. Despite a few scares in the latter stages, that goal proved sufficient to give the Jags the three points.

Thistle were first to threaten in six minutes - John Paul McBride's shot from 25 yards forced Motherwell goalkeeper Gordon Marshall into a save low down to his right. Martyn Corrigan then did well to get in front of Kenny Milne to prevent the Thistle player getting on the end of a fine Jamie Mitchell cross. Partick continued to dominate and in the 16th minute James Grady latched onto a McBride crossfield pass but the striker snatched at his shot and the ball sailed over the crossbar. Thistle should have taken the lead on the half hour mark when Adrian Madaschi beat the Motherwell offside trap and had a free header from a James Grady cross. But the big Italian's weak effort from only eight yards out was straight at Marshall, who gathered comfortably. Two minutes from half time Jags keeper Kenny Arthur came to the home side's rescue when he made a fine save from a close-range David Clarkson shot.

Motherwell stepped up the pressure at the beginning of the second half without seriously threatening Arthur's goal. In the 56th minute, Milne popped up in a crowded Well penalty area and flashed a header inches past the post after a good cross from McBride. Three minutes later, however, the home side got the breakthrough when McBride picked up a loose ball at the edge of the Motherwell penalty area and drove a low shot past Marshall and into the corner of the net. Motherwell replied with efforts from Keith Lasley, whose 25-yard drive went well wide and Burns, whose angled shot was easily saved by Arthur. When Motherwell midfielder Derek Adams shanked his shot from 14 yards well over the bar in the 73rd minute, it started to look as if the home side were at last enjoying some luck. With three minutes to go Clarkson mis-kicked right in front of goal after Lasley set him up and the Jags claimed the three points.
