“Thistle were simply abysmal” (GH). The game was over at h-t (3-0). Waddell scored from 20 yards (63) but it was a false dawn and Hearts scored again (75) for an easy win. Hearts' Hartley was spoken to by police for throwing gravel at spectators and asking if they paid to watch. Even in October, relegation looked certain.

HEARTS HAMMER THISTLE. Three first half goals set Hearts up for a comfortable victory over hapless Partick Thistle at Firhill. Andy Kirk celebrated his first start of the season with a double and Mark de Vries scored a screamer for the visitors. Ricky Waddell hit back for the Jags but Hearts substitute Stephen Simmons ensured there was to be no comeback from the home side, who have yet to register a league win this season. Both managers made sweeping changes but there were the same old problems for Thistle, who were alarmingly porous at the back and lacked bite up front.

Hearts were on top from the start and the powerful presence of de Vries and clever promptings from Jean-Louis Valois had the home team on the back foot. It took Hearts just 13 minutes to go in front when de Vries' flick on was met by Kirk and he produced an impressive left-footed shot to send the ball past goalkeeper Kenny Arthur and into the back of the net. Hearts doubled their lead in the 27th minute when Neil Macfarlane played the ball through to Paul Hartley and his cross found de Vries at the back post, who unleashed a powerful shot that left Arthur with no chance. Worse was to come for the home side when Hearts grabbed another goal three minutes later. Hartley's corner was met by Kevin McKenna and he set up Kirk to nod home from just a couple of yards out. Thistle were forced to make an unplanned change when Andy Thomson was stretchered off the park with 33 minutes on the clock and he was replaced by Gerry Britton. The introduction of the veteran gave Partick another option up front and he looked dangerous around the box, but he struggled to create any real clear-cut chances.

Partick squandered a great chance to pull a goal back a minute after the re-start when a dangerous cross from David Lilley managed to elude Britton and Stephane Bonnes on the six-yard line. Hearts were guilty of an even worse waste seconds later when they broke down the park and de Vries found himself with only Arthur to beat at the near post, but he made a mess of the shot. Jags substitute Waddell and Jamie Mitchell then got in each others way to mess up another good chance But Thistle's hard work paid off in the 63rd minute when they managed to haul a goal back and Waddell made amends for his earlier miss. New signing Adrian Madaschi nodded on to Britton and he fired the ball into the path of Waddell to allow him to unleash a tremendous 20-yard drive into the back of the net. Partick's attempts at a fightback appeared futile when Hearts added to their goal tally with 16 minutes remaining. Kirk turned provider to supply the cross for Simmons to bundle the ball over the line and put the game beyond the home side. Partick still tried to push forward right to the end - Stuart Taylor almost set up Britton for an injury-time header - but they knew that the three points were on their way to Tynecastle long before the final whistle sounded.
