“Collins raps shot-shy Jags” (SM). A poor pass-back and Deveronvale nipped in to take the lead (4). Anis made up for his error and scored (7) and the game settled down. Chances were missed before goals by Grady (a header from a corner, 51) and Thomson (a header, 80) but it should have been more.

PINT-SIZED James Grady continued his red-hot pre-season scoring form as Thistle finally saw off the plucky Highlanders. The little attacker demonstrated his readiness for his return to the top flight from Ayr United by bagging his third goal in three games. New signing Grady's 51st minute header put Jags ahead for the first time in a clash that proved tough for the SPL men. They were pushed all the way by the Highland league champions who went ahead early on through Mark Chisholm. But efforts from Jean- Yves Anis - his first in Thistle colours - Grady and then Andy Thomson earned Jags victory and they head to Ireland this week full of confidence.

Vale arrived in Glasgow's West End at short notice after the English FA prevented cash-strapped Barnsley facing Partick. And Gregg Carroll's men were not happy just to make up the numbers, including prolific front duo Ian Murray and Michael McKenzie in their starting line up. Thistle were without broken nose victim Ricky Waddell so former Hearts youngster Kenny Milne stepped in. Inside two minutes the home side came within inches of an opener when Jamie Mitchell found Grady but the hitman's lob sailed just wide. Seconds later Vale took a shock lead. A fantastic cross field pass from McKenzie was met by Chisholm who coolly slotted under new Jags No.1 Jakup Mikkelsen. It was a lovely strike and Thistle fans in the Jackie Husband Stand sportingly applauded it. However, it didn't take long for Partick to level. Winger Stephane Bonnes played in fellow new man Anis who fired past Ross Bremner.

The game settled down after the whirlwind start although there was still plenty of good football. In 23 minutes David Rowson almost made it 2-1 for the hosts only to drive past from the edge of the area. Vale stormed forward nine minutes later and only a deflection off Milne stopped Levi Stephen getting his name on the score sheet. In 52 minutes Grady fired a John Paul McBride pass just wide before Taylor had a low shot well saved by Bremner. McBride had certainly stamped his mark on the game since coming on as a substitute and in 51 minutes his corner found Grady in the six-yard box and he nodded home. Four minutes later a brilliant reflex save from Bremner denied Thomson what looked like a certainty. However, with 10 minutes remaining Thommo did add a third when he got in behind a tired Vale defence to bulge the net from a superb David Lilley cross. The impressive McBride almost grabbed number four near the end but it would have been cruel on battling Vale and his sizzling long range effort flew just over.

Partick Thistle won 3-1 over Highland League champions Deveronvale. Mark Chisholm opened the scoring for the visitors after three minutes but new signing Jean Yves Anis equalised four minutes later. James Grady put Thistle ahead on the hour mark and Andy Thomson rounded the scoring off in 79 minutes.
