This was as one-sided as the score suggests. Brady got the ball rolling (12) then goals by Taylor (22), Waddell (30), Grady (35) put Thistle 4-up. Ayr scored just before half-time. The second half was much the same. 6 subs came on and Britton (53) and Taylor (60) completed the scoring. Oh that they were all so easy!

GRADY'S DOUBLE DAZZLER. JAMES GRADY grabbed a debut double to help Thistle thrash his old mates in a one-sided stroll in the sun at Somerset Park. Grady led out his new team as captain and took only 12 minutes to dump his former club when he fired home following a lay off from Gerry Britton. Stuart Taylor, signed from Falkirk in the close-season, also nabbed a brace and he got off the mark on his Jags debut in 22 minutes, sliding home a cross from Chelsea trialist Jean-Yves Anis. Another ex-Bairn, Ricky Waddell, grabbed an easy third before Grady struck again in 35 minutes with a superb overhead kick.

Ayr pulled one back four minutes before the break when skipper Mark Campbell prodded home a corner taken by Motherwell trialist John Crawley. But Thistle had the scent for more and Britton lashed home the fifth in 53 minutes with the Ayr defence all at sea. It was a nightmare start for United's former St Mirren keeper Ludovic Roy but he redeemed himself a minute later with a great save from a thunderbolt by Anis. But the sixth did come after an hour when great lead-up work by Grady set up Taylor to sweep the ball home. Another new boy, Andy Thomson, came off the bench and was three times denied by a defiant Roy. Former Celtic misfit Stephane Bonnes might not have hit the target but his clever touches were behind many of the flowing attacks which cut Ayr to ribbons.
