12th v 11th. The first half was almost all United although Burns went close before they scored (header, 13). Gradually Thistle got themselves into the match. They were denied a good shout for a pen in the dying minutes (hand ball) then sub Waddell scored with a looping header via the bar (86) to take a deserved point .

THISTLE STING UNITED. Paul Hegarty's hopes of becoming permanent boss at Tannadice suffered another blow after side squandered a home lead for a second week running. United looked in control after Scotland striker Steven Thompson gave them a first-half lead. But Ricky Waddell equalised four minutes from time to leave United at the bottom of the Scottish Premier League table. United caretaker Paul Hegarty had been given two matches to prove he is worthy of winning the manager's job full-time. With the Tannadice side looking for their first home league win of the season, Hegarty dropped Jim Lauchlan, while Warren Cummings was out injured. Jamie McCunnie and David McCracken came in to defence. Thistle were without David Lilley through suspension with veteran Gerry Britton coming in as replacement. Italian defender Daniele Chiarni made his Scottish Premier League debut after a good performance in the midweek CIS Cup win over Dundee.

Craig Easton provided the first threat with a 20-yard drive that flew just over the Thistle crossbar. Jamie Mitchell dribbled past a couple of United defenders on the by-line only for his shot from a tight angle to be blocked by the legs of Paul Gallacher from point-blank range. But it was United who took a deserved lead in the 12th minute. Stuart Duff crossed from the left and Thompson brushed aside Chiarini to bullet a near post header home from eight yards out. Lambie immediately withdrew Mitchell from the action after the goal for fellow forward Paul Walker even though the former Clyde man did not appear to be carrying any serious injury. The home side had taken firm control by now, with sweeper Scott Paterson unable to exert much influence out of position in midfield and goalkeeper Kenny Arthur looking nervous under pressure.

Arthur did well to prevent United stretching their lead shortly after the break, turning Kevin McGowne's free kick from the edge of the box wide of the post one-handed. That was matched at the other end, with Gallacher this time denying Jamie Buchan. Partick began to take control and had loud cries for a penalty waved aside by the referee after David McCracken appeared to handle inside the box. The equaliser came shortly after, Waddell stooped to head a looping header that went over Gallacher and in off the bar.
