Kilmarnock had a lot of possession but Thistle had the best chances in the first half. They “scored“ twice but both were ruled out for off-side and Kilmarnock went in at half-time a goal up. Thistle tightened up in the second half but it was one of these games where the ball never seemed to sit kindly.

CANERO STRIKE SINKS PARTICK. Scotland Under-21 striker Peter Canero lit up an uneventful match at Rugby Park with a well-taken goal to give Kilmarnock a narrow win against Partick Thistle. Despite rallying in the second half the visitors were disappointing and they provided little entertainment for their travelling support to shout about.

Kilmarnock were first to threaten and almost broke the deadlock after just two minutes. Gary Locke picked up a loose ball and drilled it into the area where Kris Boyd was close to getting on the end of it. The home side continued to press and in the 18th minute Boyd turned Scott Paterson easily before laying the ball off to Steve Fulton, whose shot flew just past the post. Killie's Andy McLaren looked the most likely player to conjure up something and he caused havoc on the half-hour mark when he turned Martin Hardie inside-out and whipped an inviting ball across the face of goal. But none of his team-mates were able to make contact and Boyd fired into the side netting from a tight angle. Partick looked dangerous on the break and Alex Burns evaded the home defense in the 27th minute but his cross was pushed away to safety by Killie keeper Gordon Marshall. But Kilmarnock were working hard to wrest control of the midfield area and grabbed a deserved lead three minutes before the interval. A superb long ball from Barry McLaughlin found Peter Canero in space on the left side of the visitors penalty box and his curled right-foot shot soared high past Kenneth Arthur.

Kilmarnock suffered a blow just four minutes into the second half when McLaren was forced to leave the field with an arm injury which he sustained in the first period and on came James Fowler. After 52 minutes James Fowler had a good chance to double Killie's advantage, but Kenny Arthur was quick off his line to block his effort and keep the visitors in the match. Partick threw more men forward as the second half wore on and they became more desperate for an equaliser. Ricky Waddell crossed to Killie's far post, but Martin Hardie was unable to find the power or direction in his header to beat Gordon Marshall. But Thistle did not have the creativity to unlock a well-disciplined Kilmarnock defence and the Ayrshire side held on for a narrow victory.
