Rangers scored (10) and there was no doubt about the result from then on although McCulloch wasted a good chance just after. Two more goals (72 and 78) confirmed Rangers' superiority in every department. Thistle were not disgraced but they never seriously looked like reaching the final. Being there was their limit.

RANGERS DASH THISTLE'S DREAM. Rangers eventually killed off Partick Thistle's Scottish Cup dream but they were made to fight all the way for their final place. Thistle matched their city rivals for most of the game but could not find a goal despite their efforts. Even Christian Nerlinger's 10th minute goal could not dishearten the Jags and until Nerlinger doubled Rangers' lead in 72 minutes, Thistle looked like they could equalise. Eight minutes later, Barry Ferguson completed the scoring and ended Thistle's faint hopes of a comeback.

Thistle started very brightly but it was Rangers who had the first effort on goal, Ferguson trundling a left-foot shot wide of the post. Rangers scored the crucial early goal after 10 minutes. Tore Andre Flo showed good foot work before rolling the ball into the path of Nerlinger who drove the ball into the left-hand bottom corner of Kenny Arthur's net. Thistle came desperately close to equalising a few minutes later when a high ball to the back post caused confusion in the Rangers defence. Stefan Klos rushed out to try to close down the danger but the ball was squared and only Tony Vidmar's lunging challenge prevented Mark McCulloch from scoring. Shortly afterwards Scott McLean toe-poked the ball into the side-netting and Danny Lennon saw a chip land on the roof of Klos' net. Arthur did well to turn a Caniggia effort round the post before Nerlinger's shot was deflected just wide and McCann's corner came back off the bar. Nerlinger came extremely close to doubling his tally on the stroke of half-time as he got on the end of a knock-down by Flo, only for Deas to put himself in the way of the German's shot.

Partick started the second half brightly, pushing for an equaliser, with Rangers struggling to regain control of the game. Two minutes after the restart, McLean tried to set up McCulloch but the ball deflected off Amoruso and McCulloch connected awkwardly, and Klos held the ball easily. Rangers' first clear-cut opportunity of the half came in 65 minutes when Kanchelskis' cross found Flo unmarked, but his header was straight at Arthur. But Rangers did score again seven minutes later and it was Nerlinger again who scored, getting on the end of Lovenkrands' cross to sidefoot the ball past Arthur from eight yards. Ferguson made it three in 78 minutes with a beautiful curling shot from the edge of the box after a nice lay-off by Flo.
