TTA report

A tremendous strike from the corner of the box by Walker (2) gave Thistle the lead then Fleming scored with a 30-yarder (44). Arbroath hit the post (50) then scored with a 25-yard free-kick (57). Walker (fine solo run and shot under the keeper, 69) and Hardie (from close range, 90) gave the score a better look.

DON'T MENTION THE P-WORD; Lambie Playing Down Going Up. TALKING to John Lambie is like dipping into a lucky bag, you never know what you're going to get except a surprise. Recently he has come up with mouth-watering treats like, being married is pressure, not standing in a dugout. Then he was on about his reasons for not signing foreign players. He can't be bothered finding digs for them apparently. So, while many bosses are checking their blood pressure and learning how to say “I've found you a nice wee B'n'B” in French, Lambie is chilling out - he's Mr Mellow of Maryhill.

The Partick Thistle guru flies in the face of normality and he took flight again after Saturday's home win over Arbroath. He said: “That's not good enough. I've warned my lot about being too complacent but they won't listen.”

If winning comfortably without stirring themselves and moving to joint-top spot in the First Division represents complacency, then God help the rest. Unfortunately, there was no divine intervention for John Brownlie's Arbroath, a part-time squad who played like their job description.

Curiously enough, Brownlie chose not to mention the fact that his lot were generally lagging, if not left at the post. Wearing his best crabbit face he whined: “That fourth goal was a disgrace. I won't tolerate this sort of thing.”

He was referring to Martin Hardie's injury-time strike, but the game was over before then. Had he forgotten the rest or was it the old selective memory ploy?

Talking of ploys, Lambie isn't being churlish about his squad, he might be trying to keep their fight on the ground. Maybe, in his uniquely-pixillated way, he's keeping the dreaded “P-word” away from everyone's lips. Perhaps they'll be allowed to whisper “promotion” if they are still in contention by the time March hares take a daft turn but right now it's banned. Either way, it was little Paul Walker who did the damage on Saturday. He scored the opener in just two minutes and the crucial third in 69. His first from 20 yards out was fine but his second from the tightest of angles was telling and special. Had this been in the SPL, the talking heads would have been dribbling superlatives down their ties. Prior to this, Derek Fleming made it 2-0 in 44 minutes with a 30-yard shot and after the break John Cusick curled a 20-yard free kick beyond Kenny Arthur. The game was some way south of good but the goals were great and worth the admission fee alone.
