Play in the first half was disappointing although McLean's early goal was ruled off-side. He was set up by Britton for the opener (57) then Archibald scored a rare double (a 20-yard strike, keeper at fault, 73 and a header from a corner, 75). Arthur replaced the injured Gow late on and Arbroath got a consolation (90).

ARCHIBALD'S BEST FORM OF DEFENCE IS ATTACK. THOUGH Arbroath and Partick came up together from the Second Division last season, yesterday was a pointed example of how their respective fortunes have changed. While Thistle continue to rack up the points at the top end, the hosts must now attempt to halt a slide that has seen them concede 14 goals in their past four games.

Thistle's bustling strikers Scott McLean and Gerry Britton were always likely to give the home side problems, and as early as the eighth minute, a Britton header found his partner unmarked to slam the ball past Craig Hinchliffe. The celebrations were cut short, though, by the stand-side linesman's offside flag. There was a marked difference in the attitude of Arbroath from their calamitous home drubbing by Airdrie a fortnight ago, and Graham Bayne came within an ace of opening the scoring in 15 minutes when he hit a loose ball just wide of Gary Gow's goal frame. This chance apart, Arbroath's favoured long-lofted-ball approach caused Thistle little difficulty until four minutes from the break when Jim Gardner's hanging corner was headed off the goal-line by George Rowe. In fairness to the home skipper, he did seem to be pushed by a Thistle defender, though referee Cassidy, having one of his less-inspired games, missed the instant altogether.

Arbroath only had themselves to blame for Thistle opening their account at the start of the second half. The laxity that home manager John Brownlie had railed against returned as the hosts' defence were sucked en masse towards Britton on the edge of the box, allowing the striker to slip a neat pass left to Scott McLean, who steadied himself before planting the ball in the net. The goal changed the complexion of the game, and left-back Alan Archibald doubled the lead when he pounced on the ball 25 yards out after John McGlashan had tackled Derek Fleming. The left-back clearly enjoyed the moment, for he repeated his scoring exploit a couple of minutes later, outjumping the home defence to head Fleming's corner into the net. The hosts snatched a consolation in the final minute, Bain prodding John Cusick's mis-hit shot behind substitute Kenny Arthur.
