Promotion jitters perhaps bit it should have been far more convincing. Clydebank had several long range efforts before half-time but Thistle picked things up after the break and Lennon scored close in (49). McLean hit the post before Lindau finished off a Hardie pass (59) then more chances were wasted.

LAMBIE IN SALE OF THE CENTURY; MILLENNIUM THRONE KEY TO SUCCESS. JOHN LAMBIE watched Partick Thistle move three points closer to title glory then revealed the secret which is driving his team forward. The larger-than-life boss insists his side are being driven on by the possibility of becoming the first team in the country to clinch a title in what he considers Millennium year. He said: “I want us to win this league quickly because it would be a great accolade for us to become the first champions of the new Millennium. I know people say the Millennium was last year but I don't care. As far as I'm concerned this is the Millennium season and I want Thistle to become the first club in this country to win a league. That would really be great.”

Thistle will definitely be playing First Division football next season and the prospect of this appears to be on the mind of several of their stars. Overcoming Clydebank shouldn't have been too much of a problem for the Firhill men but their performance was lacklustre. The runaway league leaders dominated the early exchanges, forcing a series of corners which were poorly dealt with by Bankies keeper Jamie Campbell. However, the closest we came to goals was at the other end. John Walker watched his low shot after 18 minutes zip just wide of the right- hand post and with 35 minutes on the clock Clydebank striker Eric Paton produced a similar effort as the home support became restless.

A half-time blasting from Lambie clearly fired up the Maryhill men and two goals within 15 minutes were enough to wrap up the points. Four minutes into the second half Danny Lennon shot Thistle in front after Kenny Brannigan blocked a Scott McLean shot on the line. McLean came close to grabbing the second shortly afterwards but could only watch in frustration as his 20-yard effort rebounded off the post into the relieved arms of Campbell. However, Jags didn't have long to wait for the all-important second. After 59 minutes Martin Hardie headed into the path of Peter Lindau and the Swede made no mistake as he tucked the ball into the back of the net. Hardie and McLean both blew excellent opportunities to increase Partick's lead but the end result was never in doubt.

Thistle centre-half Mark McNally summed up the mood of his team-mates. He said: “These types of matches are always going to be difficult because teams just come here to defend and it can be very frustrating for everyone. I know we're so far ahead at the top of the table but when you run on to the pitch and see such a large crowd you shouldn't really need any motivation. Hopefully when we get into the First Division the boss will be able to bring in some new faces and we can give a good account of ourselves.”

Lambie believes the chances of being given the required funds to strengthen his squad are limited. He said: “I don't want to sound like an old record player but I can't go out and spend a lot of money. We'll probably have to make do with the squad we have just now and try to consolidate our position in the Division One next season.”

Tony Fitzpatrick, who carries out his duties with Bankies under the unusual title of consultant, was philosophical in defeat. He said: “Losing against Queen of the South on Tuesday and again today probably ends our hopes of getting second place but all we can do is just buckle down and hope there's an end to all the off-field problems.”
