Stubborn, well organised, Highland League Deveronvale stood 0-0 at half-time - helped by a below par performance from Thistle. second half goals from Hardie (header from a Hamilton cross, 50 and, almost identical, 56) put them well ahead. He also struck the woodwork twice. Collins got the 3rd in the last minute.

JAGS ARE MOTORING; McNALLY HELPING STEER FIRHILL MEN BACK AMONG BIG BOYS. MARK McNALLY always regarded Partick Thistle as one of Scotland biggest clubs. When the former Celtic defender quit Parkhead for a four-year spell in England, the Jags were still in the Premier League. By the time he signed for the Firhill club five years later, they had slumped into the Second Division. Now McNally is determined to help shoot Thistle back into the big time and it appears they are well on the way there. While this Scottish Cup win over Deveronvale was welcome, all that matters to the Maryhill side this season is promotion. McNally said: “It would be a disaster if Thistle didn't go up this season with the support we have. I was injured when we played Queen's Park at Hampden the other week. There must have been 3500 Thistle fans there, which is remarkable. Thistle definitely gave the Premier League something. Every time I came to Firhill with Celtic the ground was full. They also took a big support to Parkhead and Ibrox. The league is what's important for us this season and I think the club want to get back to full-time football in the near future.” McNally left Celtic in 1995. He enjoyed successful spells at Southend and Stoke City until a move back to Scotland with Dundee United, which didn't work out. Now he is determined to make a name for himself again and is clearly enjoying being a Thistle player. He said: “I'm delighted to be here and hopefully we can go up this season. I would love to stay but I'm on a contract until the end of this season, as are most of the other lads, so it's a good incentive for us to win promotion and win a new contract as well. I'm enjoying being back in Glasgow, close to my family and friends and at the end of the season if Thistle offer me something then that would be great. It's not a problem for me playing at Thistle after being at a club like Celtic because there aren't many bigger places you can go after leaving Parkhead. This is my job and I've got to make the most of it because if I don't there are plenty of players around to take your place.”

McNally and Thistle certainly do appear to be on the up and a shock was never really on the cards in the cup tie. Highland League side Deveronvale are a good team and caused a few problems, particularly in the first half. Although they never really looked like scoring, they did themselves and their large band of supporters a lot of credit. The first half was fairly forgettable. The best chance fell to Jags' Brian Hamilton, whose long-range effort fizzed just wide.

But Hamilton had a hand in the opening goal when he crossed from the left in the 50th minute for the dangerous Martin Hardie to bullet in a header. Six minutes later Hardie headed No2, this time from a Danny Lennon centre. Deveronvale's efforts probably deserved a goal. Jamie Watt had a chance 10 yards from goal 10 minutes from time but James Smith put in a saving tackle. With almost the last kick, Derek Collins, on loan from Hibs, pounced on a loose ball inside the box and fired in the third.

Deveronvale boss Gregg Carrol was happy with his side's efforts and admitted to being realistic before the game. He said: “We never came here to beat Thistle. That really wasn't going to happen when you look at the players they've got. We caused them a few problems and did well in the first half. The players were here to learn something and certainly did that.”

For Thistle boss John Lambie it was a case of a job done without any frills. He said: “I thought we were diabolical in the first half but I suppose the most important thing is that we're through to the next round. All credit must go to Deveronvale because it was their day and they did well.”
