There was little to report in the first half. Wild shooting meant the keepers were idle. Hardie missed the best chance from 4 yards. After half-time Thistle were much more positive and Lennon cracked in a 20-yarder after a corner was only partially cleared (61). It should have been more. QP's 100% record gone.

SOFTLY SOFTLY GETS LAMBIE OFF THE HOOK; JAGS PACK EXTRA STING. THISTLE manager John Lambie admitted that dropping his usual hardline approach to his players had got him off the hook. The last time these bitter rivals met at Hampden, in 1983, a certain Maurice Johnston scored to give the Jags a 1-0 win. Seventeen years on, 2500 Thistle fans marched home triumphant again after seeing Danny Lennon bag the points.

With the Firhill club seven points behind Queen's before kick-off, victory was vital and the normally forthright Lambie admitted he'd opted for a softly, softly approach to bring the best out of his players. He said: “I eased off. I felt I was overdoing it at training instead of keeping that wee edge for Saturday. It's a big result for the fans and a big result for the club.” Lambie revealed he'd been a bag of nerves, believing his future might have been at stake. He admitted: “I must have smoked 20 cigarettes out there but I can light a cigar now. Kenny Arthur had a great game in goal and he was the first man I shook hands with.”

Thistle should have been in front three minutes before half-time. Derek Lyle, a 22nd-minute sub for injured Derek McWilliams, swung in a cross which Martin Hardie hooked over from six yards out. They eventually got the goal they deserved in 61 minutes. Paul McGrillen's corner broke out to former Hibs and Raith star Lennon whose 30- yard drive took a deflection on its way into the net. Five minutes later Peter Lindau sent Scott McLean racing clear on goal but Queen's keeper Colin Stewart dived bravely at the striker's feet. At the other end Arthur dived full stretch to block a Mark Gallagher free-kick then got a fingertip to Graham Duncan's 30-yard drive. But right at the death McGrillen scorned a glorious chance to kill the game. Defender Denis Connaghan lost possession but instead of teeing up McLean, McGrillen tried to chip the keeper and his effort slid inches wide.

Queen's boss John McCormack said: “That's the first goal we've lost this season but I don't have to look at the league table because we're still top.”
