The OH credits Peter Lindau with Thistle's second (by process of elimination) but SB/DR and a cutting which could either be GH or SOS all say it was Derek Lyle and we go with this convincing majority.

Queens scored (18) with a fine wind assisted shot. Goals by Lennon following a corner (37) and Lyle (flick over the keeper, 41) made it 2-1. Queens levelled (56) then went ahead (65) before Lindau's header at the far post (69) and Craig's tap-in made it 4-3 (72). Jacobs from 20 yards (79) and Queens' 25-yarder (84) finished it. Queens had a man sent off (89).

SECOND-RATE JAGS ARE GIVEN A FIRST-CLASS LAMBASTING. THISTLE manager John Lambie aimed an icy blast at his players after they edged a nine- goal thriller at wintry Firhill. Despite seeing his side go second in the table, the gaffer was in no mood to deliver plaudits. Thistle, who had kept a tight ship in previous weeks, made a series of diabolical errors to allow their lowly visitors a fleeting glimpse of glory. Lambie said: “We might have got the result but the way we defended was diabolical. When we went ahead we should at least have played with a bit more authority. The conditions weren't the best but that's no excuse for sloppiness. We were so slack I thought Queens were going to score every time they went up the park. If we defend like that again we are going to be punished and I have let them know in no uncertain terms what I thought of them. That was probably our worst performance of the season.”

Queens got going a lot quicker than their hosts and went close after only three minutes when Allan Preston's wind- assisted free-kick was tipped over the bar by Alex Arthur - in for suspended Kevin Budinauckas. The Division Two basement boys deservedly took the lead when midfielder Denis Boyle blasted home a 30- yarder after 18 minutes. That woke up the complacent hosts and veteran midfielder Danny Lennon equalised with a cracking free-kick in 37 minutes. Man-of-the match Derek Lyle put the Jags 2-1 up with the goal of the game just before half- time. Quinton Jacobs slipped his marker on the left before delivering a cross to Lyle, who coolly lobbed Queens keeper David Mathieson.

Thistle looked even more lethargic after the break and Queens fans' hero Steve Mallan levelled in the 55th minute. Queens debutant Graham Duncan, who signed from Albion Rovers on Friday, then embarrassed his hosts with a headed goal in the 65th minute. However, three minutes later, Swede Peter Lindau - who was playing the last game of his loan spell from Ayr United - made it 3-3 with a far-post header from full-back Eric Paton's free-kick. Albert Craig restored Thistle's lead with a simple tap-in after 72 minutes and Jacobs fired No.5. On-loan St Johnstone hitman Allan Preston reduced the deficit with a superb long- range effort but Thistle, who started the season so poorly but have now only lost once in their last 16 games, held on.

Queens co-manager Ken Eadie said: “We dominated from start to finish and didn't deserve to come away with nothing. At no point in the game did I ever think we were going to lose. When we made it 3- 2 I really thought that was it. My players are devastated. To score four goals away from home and still take nothing from the game is a real nightmare.” To make matters wose, Queens had Warren Hawke sent off for a second bookable offence two minutes from time.
