A much improved performance by a Thistle side weakened by suspension and injury. Evans scored with a header at the back post (21) then a well taken goal by Henderson just inside the box (45) made it 2-0. Hamilton had some fine saves but Thistle weathered the storm and saw the game out. Still looking for a miracle.

THE white-knuckle ride that appears to go hand in hand with supporting Partick Thistle shows little sign of winding down, even at this stage of the season. Being brought back from the dead as an organisation is enough excitement for most people, but the Maryhill Magyars now seem hell- bent on joining that exclusive club founded by Lazarus all those years ago and remaining afloat in their division after many had given them up as a lost cause.

On Saturday, for instance, Airdrie popped into Firhill for the final time this season and took their leave of the old stadium having received a cordial welcome, a cup of tea, and a going-over. Goals from Gareth Evans and Nicky Henderson not only had the Thistle following on their feet but must have sent a distinct chill down the spines of those also loitering at the undignified end of the table. Later, the door marked John McVeigh, Head Coach, opened, revealing the sometimes rather excitable Thistle leader lounging in nonchalant fashion, struggling to contain his glee at his men having scooped up what their play merited during the afternoon. “We were magnificent in the first half,” said McVeigh, “and after that we did the professional job and killed the game off.” The manager added that it was not the case that Airdrie were off colour, more that his lot had not allowed them any chance to shine. However, between now and about 4.45 on May 9, Thistle have, in their manager's words, “four cup finals” to be played. “If we take care of those I think we'll play first division football next season.” Of course, most teams who have experienced the goings-on at Firhill in recent times would probably have gone belly up long before now, but Partick Thistle have seldom conformed to normality. Will they maintain their status in Scottish football? The bookies doubt it, but they're not always right. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to Ladbrokes.
