“A performance…little short of disgraceful” (GH). But for Arthur this would have been much worse. No spark, no invention. Gaughan's OG (32) was cancelled out by a scrambled effort by Henderson (58) but Albion scored again (63, pen and 78). Nicolson blasted a rebounded Morgan pen over the bar (84).

FIRHILL has been the venue for many great matches and excellent Partick Thistle performances. Gifted players, well-taken goals, fine saves, tingling excitement - and then there was Saturday. As though the regular customers do not have enough on their collective plate in having to dig deep to keep Thistle in existence, the guys who pull on the boots saw fit at the weekend to turn in a performance which was little short of disgraceful.

Thistle were outplayed and out-thought in every department by a team who, last time out, were beaten 6-0 on their own patch. However, no blame should be placed at the door of the players, claims Thistle manager John McVeigh. “I take full responsibility for that performance,” he said. How so? Well, McVeigh apparently felt a little sorry for his men after their fruitless efforts against Airdrie earlier in the week and decided to take some of the strain out of the subsequent training sessions, a decision that the manager now deeply regrets. “I went slack on them during the week,” claimed McVeigh, adding, in more colourful language, that his error would not be repeated. Two strikes from Alex Bone and an own-goal by Kevin Gaughan, with only a scrambled effort by Nicky Henderson on the plus side, made sure Thistle fans would not enjoy Saturday evening and had keeper Kenny Arthur played as badly as the rest of his pals, then Thistle's defeat would have been far heavier. However, the youngster should be informed that it is well within the rules that goalkeepers are permitted to leave their line in an effort to collect opponent's crosses, thus alleviating excess pressure on over-worked defenders. As for Stirling, their manager, Kevin Drinkell, has more than forgiven them for last week's mega defeat, and claimed satisfaction that his men now have a three-point buffer between themselves and those beneath them in the division. Due to Thistle's financial plight McVeigh's task is one which is envied by few, but the man appears to possess a mountain of determination, the trick is passing that on to his players.
