A wet night, a poor performance - although 2 of Hull's goals looked suspiciously off-side. Thistle improved in the 2nd half but although they created a few chances (the best from Conner) they couldn't score. Hull scored their 3rd with a header at the death to complete a miserable night.

Mark Hateley made a triumphant return to Glasgow as player-manager of a Hull City side who put a real dampener on Partick Thistle's pre-season build-up. Thistle failed to contain the under-strength English Third Division side losing 3-0 at rain-soaked Firhill. The home side had their first real shot in the 11th minute when Andy Lyons saw his effort deflected past the right-hand post of ex-Raith Rovers goalkeeper Scott Thomson. But after 28 minutes Hull took the lead with a fine goal. Thistle lost possession on the halfway line and Sam Sharman swerved a lovely pass with the outside of the right boot into the path of Duane Darby. He raced clear to slam in a low 15-yard shot which fairly skidded into the net. After 40 minutes it was 2-0. Warren Joyce floated in a free-kick from the right and the Jags defence failed to pick up Andy Brown in the six-yard box. He ghosted in to glance home a free header.

After the break, Thistle's David Moss had a clear run on goal but delayed his shot and squared the ball to a surprised Robert Connor, whose effort was cleared for a corner. Right on full-time, Hull defender Bob Dewhurst bulleted home a powerful header from a Neil Mann cross. With Thistle's frailties in defence exposed and possession surrendered too easily, Jags gaffer John McVeigh has major cause for concern. He will hope for a better showing on Saturday when Thistle visit Hamilton Accies at Cliftonhill.
