Having been the better team Thistle were unlucky not to be ahead at half-time. Moss and MacDonald missed good chances. Premier Division Motherwell had a perfectly good goal chalked off and it spurred them on to take over as Thistle faded. A low volley (65) and a curling shot (74) won it. Watson also cleared off the line.

A Jekyll and Hyde performance from Motherwell earned the Premier side a place in the next round of the Tennents Scottish Cup. But it would be interesting to find out what manager Alex McLeish really said to his players during the half time interval to create such a change in fortune. Throughout the first half the Fir Park side were sadly missing from this tie - almost as much as their support threatened to be because of a motorway snarl-up which meantthe kick-off was held for 19 minutes to allow them to get to the ground.

First Division Partick took the initiative and as early as the fourth minute were unfortunate not to go ahead when a McWilliams drive seemed net bound until it touched a defender and was diverted wide. That was unfortunate but midfielder Moss, who has such an outstanding record this season for scoring, really should have done better midway through the half when with the goal beckoning, he shot hurriedly and high. There was a feeling that if Partick did not convert their chances they would be punished and that is exactly what happened.

From the start of the second period there was a positive attitude, which had been missing, in the Motherwell side. Suddenly their midfield with McSkimming prominent, began to assert itself and the chances were created for the eager strikers Coyne and Coyle. It was McSkimming who provided the breakthrough when he fastened on to a May pass to drive home the opener. With Motherwell now full of confidence and showing the gap of class it was no surprise when sub Davies steered in a second with a low, curling left-foot drive.
