A 2nd yellow then a red for abuse of officials (29) reduced Airdrie to 10 men. An Evans goal (long ball, lucky break off defender, slotted home, 34) was enough but Airdrie wasted the best chances. Thistle were under severe pressure most of the second half and the post saved them (89). There were 5 other bookings.

DESPITE a late rally, the ten men of Airdrie failed to force extra time against First Division rivals Partick Thistle in last night’s Coca-Cola Cup tie at Firhill. Six bookings and an ordering-off accurately reflected the endeavour of both sides, but a first-half goal from Gareth Evans was enough to separate them and put the Glasgow team into the quarter-final draw at the expense of Alex MacDonald’s cup specialists, and semi-finalists in the last two seasons.
