Thistle were well beaten by a dirty, cynical team with lots of skill and pace. McDonald (reportedly homesick) came in for rough treatment from the crowd and retaliated with some gestures. Curran scored from just inside the box on his debut (84) but the game was lost following 2 goals (29 and 75). It was 3-3 in bookings.

IT was the unpredictable and the unpronounceable in pursuit of unattainable, a place by the cat-flap of Europe's back door. Thistle had to beat Zagreb, and wait on favourable results from the rest of Europe, if they were to have a chance of getting into the UEFA Cup as one of the second-placed teams in this quaint competition, the Intertoto Cup. They didn't, they aren't.

This started off dully and quickly slumped into somnolence. The high spot in the barren plateau of the first half was the performance of the pernickity referee, one Jon Skjervold, of Norway, who had two players, one from each side, bookes inside the first five minutes for one fairly innocuous tackle and one incursion on a free-kick. For the record, these were Sandi Cavkic and Wayne Foster. Four more followed later, two from each camp.

Partick's new signing from St Johnstone, Harry Curran, had one neatly-clipped pass in the ninth minute and then got on the end of a touch-back, blasting wide. Apart from that, he was barely distinguishable from the morass of this Thistle side. He got a late goal when it did not matter, but seemed to be no better value than the late, un-lamented striker he replaced, Roddy Grant, who is now back at McDiarmid Park for a second spell.
