On an energy-sapping evening (80 degrees at 8pm) Thistle took some time to acclimatise and were lucky it was 0-0 at h-t. Metz scored (56) when a cross was rifled in. McWilliams rounded the keeper but hit the post as the team visibly wilted in the heat. There was no way back. Fine saves by Walker followed.

The Jags legions enjoyed a few Kronenburgs and went to the ground. They were even more jubilant as Metz midfielder Isaias began by wellying two free kicks over Nicky Walker's bar. Local forward Pouget was booked for diving, then come-back kid Kinnaird was in la Iivre for dissent. The teams turned goalless, the Maryhill faithful belted out La Marseillaise. After 53 minutes Metz scored the kind of goal they had been threatening all evening. Exposed on the left, Thistle gave Pouget space from seven yards. No bother. The Jags bounced right back and almost from the kick-off McWilliams hit a post. Isaias was booked, Thistle sent on Turner and McKee, but Metz remained superior. In the words of a bus favourite “It's A Heartache, Following The Partick.” Ah well… only 18 hours till I'm home.

Then it's time to get your sun block and travellers cheques sorted as we are away to Austria and France for games against LASK Linz and Metz, and return to Firhill replete with clinking bags from duty free for matches against Keflavik and NK Zagreb. Hear all the tales of punch ups, lost luggage, ill-advised offside passes and maybe the odd can or two of cheap French lager out the local Carrefour in the park. We then conclude the podcast by asking the immortal question… When UEFA come to their senses and bring back the greatest tournament in continental football history, the Intertoto Cup, where do you want Thistle to go?
