610 saw Thistle finally see off Ayr in this friendly. Ayr hit the post and Cairns had a fine save early on. Byrne and Gibson were booked (the latter taken off to prevent a second yellow). Foster's low drive (32) put Thistle ahead then Charnley shot against the keeper's legs. Cairns had more fine saves until Foster fired home (88).

With no game on February 18th, Thistle arranged a friendly with First Division strugglers Ayr United at Somerset Park on the Friday night and won 2-0. With Nicky Walker on duty with the Scotland 'B' side, Mark Cairns made his first starting appearance for the first team.

It took two goals from Wayne Foster, one in each half, to win this low key match played in front of a sparse crowd. Those two goals mean that Foster has managed the impressive tally of four goals in just eight games for Thistle. It could even have been five but for the referee's interpretation of the offside law in the cup tie at Dundee.

Best for Thistle were Mark Cairns, who was solid in goal, Tom Smith and Stephen Docherty. Overall it was a useful exercise but we could have done without the bookings picked up by David Byrne and Andy Gibson. For programme collectors, a 32 page programme priced £1.00 was on sale at the match.
