Opening of the JHS. Foster (on his debut) scored (33) but a much improved performance by Hibs saw them go 2-1 ahead with goals 53 and a 20-yard drive (62). A huge clearance by Walker went over Leighton's head and English tapped in (80). A foul then an elbow on Foster led to 2 Hibs red cards in last 10 mins.

WAYNE FOSTER scored in his first match for Partick and two Hibs players Tweed and Tortolano were sent off for offences against him. Who said today’s football was monotonous. It was supposed to be one of those rare occasions at Firhill a day for festivity and celebration. Partick officially opened their new £2.3m stand, though their chairman Jim Oliver wonders if it will ever be full. They introduced their two new players, Foster and Nicky Walker, the products of a double swap with Hearts. Above all, they wanted three points from Hibs and the Edinburgh side, even with nine men, were not prepared to be that generous. It has been a frustrating season for Hibs manager Alex Miller. He is unhappy that his side has now drawn no fewer than 10 out of 16 matches to lose valuable ground to Rangers and Motherwell. Yesterday, Miller was less than ecstatic that his team, quite apart from their loss of self-control near the end, conceded two goals through unbelievable and untypical defensive errors.

For Thistle, manager John Lambie escaped the consequences of his strange decision in letting Jamieson move to Hearts as part of this week’s four-man exchange, knowing that he could not call on his other central defender Watson because of suspension. Byrne, Dinnie and Milne patrolled the middle resolutely, though were sorely troubled by the speed of Jackson, while Foster had an excellent first match and could be a key factor in Partick’s long struggle to avoid relegation. With Partick packing the centre of their defence from the start there were early opportunites for Hibs to create space down the flanks. Miller twice ventured up field in promising fashion then Jackson broke free on the left to deliver a cross which was driven too high by Harper. Jackson then produced a valuable contribution at the other end, clearing off the line a fine angular header by Foster. Charnley was making little impact, and too often Partick resorted to the hopeful long ball, mainly through Dinnie and McWilliams. It was not the way to tackle a defence that was highly organised at that stage but at least it insured that Hibs could build up no more than sporadic pressure. The visitors composed an attractive move when O’Neill released Jackson down the right for a low cross which Harper only managed to deflect straight at Walker. Foster, who was being fed meagre rations but looked eager and alert, made space for McDonald with an astute flick but the resultant drive had twice the necessary elevation. Suddenly Foster was looking at a tasty morsel from the most unlikely of sources. Hunter, who had looked composed and commanding, failed to control a harmless ball in midfield and McDonald sent Foster through for the most clinical of finishes low into the near corner. Craig had his name taken for dissent as Hibs responded. O’Neill, anonymous until then, showed superb dribbling skills but his hard cross was held acrobatically by Walker. It was an auspicious first half for Thistle’s two new men.

But all good things come to an end. Within a minute of the resumption Harper was injured in a tackle and Weir appeared in his place. The little man’s nippiness proved an immediate stimulus for Hibs and O’Neill’s finely flighted cross was headed down by Jackson for McGinlay’s first goal since his return to the club. Hibs were transformed into a more purposeful side. Jackson just failed to control a searching cross from Tortolano but the striker was buzzing and one of his penetrating passes gave O’Neill, just outside the box, the time to look up and direct a fierce diagonal shot beyond Walker. The invisible man had become highly visible. English replaced the injured McWilliams as Partick opted to devote extra resources to attack and Charnley, in his one moment of indiscretion, was booked for a rash foul on Miller. Thistle equalised from another disastrous mistake by Hibs. A long clearance from Walker was completely misjudged by Leighton. The ball bounced over his head and English had the simplest of tasks. From then on Hibs’ self-discipline deserted them. Tweed was sent off for holding back Foster, who was then once again the victim as Tortolano elbowed him in the face and was also red-carded.
