Charnley fired wide from 25 yards (3) then Nelson fumbled but recovered. Jamieson headed wide (30). Barnes was sent off (33, 2nd yellow card). Thistle's 10 men were on the back foot most of the second half and ex-JAG Shaw headed the winner via the bar (67) as legs began to tire. Cameron might have levelled at the death.

Cold feet couldn’t prevent George Shaw making it hot for old club Thistle. Shaw, who moved with Gerry Britton from Firhill to Dens earlier this year, scored after almost missing the game. He had been doubtful until an hour before kick-off with a foot injury. But an injection to freeze the foot did the trick and he ended up leaving Thistle to feel the icy chill of the relegation zone.

“Although I could run all right before the game, I felt the injury when I was striking through the ball,” said Shaw. “It was decided I should have a jag and I got through the game thanks to that. It’s still fine, but I reckon I could be in agony tonight. At least the two points will help deaden the pain. It was so important for us to beat Thistle after such a poor display against Hearts. Now we can look forward to the Cup-tie at Kilmarnock – and we are not giving up League survival.” Shaw, who scored four times in a 6-3 win AGAINST Dundee last season, struck gold with a header from Neil McCann’s cross after 68 minutes. Shaw is certain his move was the right one – even if the Dens side don’t stage a miracle recover. “I think Jim Duffy has great ideas for this club and will get things right given the time,” added Shaw. “We have had a further boost this week with the signing of Neil Duffy and he will help make us a better side.” Manager Jim Duffy was satisfied with the performance of cousin Neil and French goalkeeper Michel Pageau.

The game started to go wrong for Thistle when Bobby Barnes, booked for foolishly kicking the ball away, was sent off for a foul on McCann. Jags boss John Lambie said: “The ordering off was one of these things you have to accept, but I still couldn’t see us losing.” Thistle face St Johnstone in a four-pointer at Firhill tomorrow and Lambie added: “//We have to show the fight to get out of trouble.
