St Johnstone seldom threatened and gradually Thistle took over. Craig lifted a through ball over the keeper (45). A double clearance off the line by Watson (53) was followed by Britton rounding the keeper (60) then poor defending let in Grant (67) and St Johnstone's late strike was of little consequence.

PARTICK Thistle proved their defeat at Celtic Park was no more than a blip with a convincing victory over St Johnstone. Their task was made considerably easier by the home side, whose poor form has now seen them fail to win any of their last seven matches. A late goal by Curran was little more than a consolation effort which had the visiting fans cheering ironically.

The remnants of a harsh overnight frost made the playing surface treacherous. Both sides struggled simply to keep their balance, let alone produce constructive attacking movements. Passing back to the goalkeeper can be a hazardous business at the best of times but in these conditions it amounted to Russian roulette. Even Rhodes, who normally invites his defenders to give him as much of the ball as possible, endured several anxious moments. McClelland, the St Johnstone manager, selected himself for the first time since February and as a sedate first half drew to a close he must have been wondering why he had not bothered to appear in earlier games. Then, just as they had done against Aberdeen a week earlier, his side conceded an injury-time goal. Jamieson spied a gap in the heart of the home defence and rolled the ball into the path of Craig, who lofted his shot over the advancing Rhodes.

Although they were fortunate to be ahead at half-time, the visitors deserved their victory after a decisive second half. St Johnstone were continually exposed by sharp counter-attacks and fell further behind after an hour. Cole failed to put sufficient power into a header towards Rhodes and Britton nipped in to round the goalkeeper and score with ease. Seven minutes later Grant had the pleasure of netting against his former team when he beat Rhodes from 20 yards.
