Good start, poor middle, good finish. Shaw nipped in to score (4) but Thistle fell out of it. Nelson had a fine save on the line but was beaten by a free header (42). Byrne hit the post before Dundee went ahead (deflected free-kick, 71). Thistle rallied and Taylor scored with a diving header (78) then hit the bar late on.

DUNDEE and Partick Thistle did enough to suggest that their respective battles against relegation this season will not necessarily be in vain in this entertaining draw at Dens Park last night. Goals from Billy Dodds and Stevie Pittman for the home side, and George Shaw and Alex Taylor for the visitors, saw the game end even.

Thistle took just four minutes to score. Isaac English turned quickly inside the Dundee box to lose his marker, John McQuillan, and when he squared the ball for George Shaw, his task in scoring from six yards was simple. Dundee were spurred into action and on the quarter hour mark they felt they had equalised. Croatian Dragutin Ristic was fouled by Willie Jamieson 25 yards from goal and when he took the free kick himself, his low shot struck a post then hit keeper Nelson’s back and appeared to go over the line. Referee Martin Clark disagreed. The home side’s pressure was rewarded with a goal three minutes before the interval. Their Polish midfielder, Piotr Czaczowski, played the perfect pass down the right flank for John McQuillan to cross. Billy Dodds lost his marker with ease and headed home.

Five minutes into the second half, Thistle sent on Taylor for English. It was an open game, and Pittman, Ristic and McKeown for the home side, and Byrne and Shaw for Thistle all had chances, but failed to take them. Thistle also felt they should have had a penalty when Dundee’s Dusan Vrto lashed out at Albert Craig inside the box. Vrto was booked, but referee Clark awarded a free kick to Dundee. When a goal did come it was for Dundee and it contained an element of luck. Pittman was fouled by Byrne just outside the box and when the American passport -holder fired in the free kick, it took a deflection past Nelson. With just 19 minutes left Dundee’s position looked good, but Thistle hit back. Britton, who had replaced Byrne just after the second goal, found space on the right and crossed for fellow substitute Taylor to send a diving header into the back of the net.
