St Johnstone “reject” Grant exacted some revenge on his old club by scoring 3 (power header, 6, headed in after a fine run by Cameron, 29, and a deflected shot, 38). Saints had levelled (cracking volley, 15). After a few chances were missed, Grant set up Taylor for 4-1 (88). Thistle ran out convincing winners.

Roddy Grant led Partick’s goal charge with a first half hat-trick. Grant took only six minutes to strike when he got above the Saints defence to head in a corner from Ian Cameron. Saints struck back for an equaliser in the 14th minute when John Davies cleverly controlled the ball before slotting his shot into the net. But there was no answer to Grant during the half and in the 29th minute Partick took the lead again with a superbly created score. Cameron provided the lead-up work with a run on the left and his cross was met by the diving Grant who headed into the net in spectacular fashion. His third came seven minutes from the interval. With little danger threatening, Kevin McGowne slipped in attempting to clear and the ball spun to Grant whose shot was deflected into the net. During the second half Saints tried to get back into the game but two minutes from time substitute Alex Taylor added a fourth to complete the scoring.
