A clean sweep of wins against Dundee. Nelson saved the day early on then a pen by Cameron (Shaw pulled down going for short pass-back, 35) put Thistle ahead. Chances were missed by both sides and Thistle held out in the face of some provocation for a deserved win. They climbed to 7th place, edging towards safety.

Exiles return to haunt Dundee… PARTICK Thistle’s “Tayside connection” made a major contribution towards continued premier division action at Firhill next season by beating Simon Stainrod’s Dens Park strugglers 1-0 on Saturday. None of the visitors celebrated more than former Dark Blues Willie Jamieson, Albert Craig, and Colin McGlashan. The fourth victory of the term over their former employers virtually assured Thistle of safe passage out of the relegation zone. With considerable assistance, too, from Dundonians Ray Farningham and Don McVicar, each of whom had been passed over by their home-town outfit, the Jags’ success story was a result of home-sprung interests.

And to stretch such matters even further, the entire Thistle roadshow was conducted by newly-acquired Alex Taylor, who of course spent his formative years in the game at Dundee United’s football academy at Tannadice Park. That type of apprenticeship served John Lambie’s men well on Saturday as the gifted midfielder pulled most of the main Thistle strings in a professional performance for his new club. The same, however, could not be said for the display served up by the hosts who, in defeat, now find themselves sucked deeper and deeper into the relegation zone swamp with just three points separating them from second-bottom Airdrie, who have a game in hand. In fact, Dundee have not won any of their past eight league outings, and a two -point haul from the 16 available in that series is scarcely an encouraging sign as far as the financially-troubled Dens outfit is concerned.

The goal which decided Saturday’s outcome came at a time which hurt Dundee most, a truly incredible Andy Murdoch save from a blistering Stainrod volley in 32 minutes had preceded the visitors racing away to the other end for Ian Cameron to clinch victory with his spot-kick winner. Home keeper Paul Mathers and recent French import Lionel David left a through ball to each other, George Shaw nipped in to pick up the scraps, and was promptly floored by Mathers. A penalty it was, and Cameron fired the ball home with ease.
