Three off but honours even… SURVIVAL being the name of the game, no-one was paying much homage to the beautiful game at Broomfield. But few were falling asleep, either. When three players are sent off and three others booked, there is no time to look for the niceties. The net result of as hectic a night’s football, or something close to it, as we will see, was a point apiece, a satisfactory result for Thistle but one that leaves Airdrie with an immense task to get out of the “R” zone. Yet until the last minute they looked as if they had accomplished a marvellous comeback. Having been a goal down they had gone 2-1 ahead, taking advantage of the sending off of George Shaw 15 minutes from time. But then they lost Kenny Black who was sent off at that point and then Thistle equalised. And completing the most remarkable last minute of this, or another season, Airdrie’s substitute Alan Lawrence was sent off for a foul on Thistle keeper Craig Nelson.

John Martin, Airdrie’s regular keeper, had to miss out because of injury, the first time in 12 years that he has not been fit enough to take his place. Willie McCulloch, who came in, must have wondered if he had been done any favours as his defensive colleagues made some alarming errors. He looked as if he had lost a goal as early as eight minutes when Gerry Britton pushed the ball past him, but the Thistle man was just offside. However, if Airdrie were sloppy at the back, young Thistle keeper Nelson nearly presented the home side with a goal. Davie Irons passed the ball towards Nelson who took his eye off it, miskicked, and was relieved when Jack shot past. Then in 30 minutes, Airdrie gave away a penalty. Don MacVicar sent over a long throw-in and, as Britton rose, he was hampered by Justin Fashanu. Referee Ian Taylor booked Walter Kidd and Chris Honor for protesting before Ian Cameron made a good job of the spot kick. Then Fashanu had his name taken for dissent.

The bookings continued after the interval when Shaw had his name taken for a foul on Kidd, and Black was booked — his thirteenth of the season — after he downed Shaw. Between those, however, Airdrie managed to equalise. Honor finished off the move with a header after Fashanu had nodded a Black free kick into goal. In 66 minutes Airdrie put on Alan Lawrence for Wes Reid just before Gerry Britton became the second Thistle player to have his name taken. A sending off seemed inevitable, but when it came, it mystified everyone, maybe even Shaw who was the man to take the walk in 75 minutes. It was only after the stand-side linesman drew the referee over and pointed out an incident unseen by the rest of us that Shaw was booked a second time and had to leave the field. Ten minutes from time Airdrie took advantage of their extra man when Coyle headed home a Fashanu cross. In the last minute Black who had been booked earlier was sent off after he fouled Albert Craig. And from the free kick Thistle moved forward and Irons hit a shot which was deflected into the net.
