Thistle took an early lead (Tierney header) then when Murdoch flapped, a Falkirk cross was deemed to have gone in (30). Lost possession led to Falkirk going ahead (36). Shaw shot home (52) but Irons was red carded (54) and goals (72 and 76) completed a miserable night. 5 other Jags players were booked.

Falkirk punish 10-man Thistle… THE evening started so well for Thistle at Brockville last night. Defender Grant Tierney, who seldom gets his name on the scoresheet, nodded them into the lead with many of his side’s faithful still filing into the ground. And it appeared that the club’s recent revival, in which they have taken three points from a possible four, still was on course. However, from bright openings can, and in this instance did, come dark conclusions, and not for the first time little Kevin McAllister proved the big hit with two goals for Falkirk.

The match opened briskly and hardly slackened. Six Thistle players were booked and David Irons was red-carded for a second bookable offence. After Tierney’s opener, from a Paul Kinnaird free kick, the home team’s attacking skills kept Thistle under pressure and keeper Andy Murdoch was lucky to escape when he missed two crosses in succession, only to see his defenders clear off the line. The visitors looked more organised and their quick breaks had Falkirk’s defenders and fans on edge. But they seemed to have a never-say-die air about them. This was rewarded in 30 minutes and this time it was third time unlucky for Murdoch. He missed an Alex Taylor free kick, and although the ball was cleared, referee Jim Fulton judged that it had crossed the line. Falkirk were now on a high and it was no surprise when they took the lead in 36 minutes. Thistle defender Paul McLaughlin dallied long enough in the centre circle for Richard Cadette to rob him and set Kevin McAllister free. The Bairns’ skipper sped through and chipped the ball past Murdoch from a narrow angle.

The second half opened at the same breakneck pace as the first and before many fans had again settled, Thistle had not only equalised but a moment of madness reduced them to 10 men. In 52 minutes Gerry Britton went past two defenders and set Albert Craig clear, and although his volley was parried by Tony Parks, George Shaw had an easy task to shoot home from six yards. Then Irons, who had already been booked for dissent, had a rash challenge on Forbes Johnston and this left the referee with no alternative but to send the Thistle man off. Falkirk then took control and it was only a matter of time before they went ahead. In 72 minutes a David Weir pass was headed on by Neil Duffy, and McAllister sprinted clear again to volley home from 12 yards. Falkirk sealed their victory four minutes later when an Eddie May cross was headed home by Duffy. This was an extremely valuable victory in Falkirk’s battle to clear the relegation zone, but watching Celtic manager Liam Brady also will know that Falkirk will not be dispatched from the cup all that easily.
