The game seemed to be destined for a dull 0-0 draw from the start as both teams squandered possession and failed to take the few chances they created. McLaughlin cleared off the line early on, Kinnaird blazed over, McLaughlin's free-kick was well saved, St Johnstone hit the post (76). Unsurprisingly, it finished goalless.

Saints and Thistle gunners fire blanks… COMPARED with the ostentatious behaviour at some other venues, McDiarmid Park had a etiquette of its own. Good manners and restraint were the rule, especially restraint. If either St Johnstone or Partick Thistle had so far forgotten themselves to score, it would have been seen as showing off. John McClelland, the Perth chief coach and player, afterwards sought reflections on the game in a vast beaker of fizzy ginger. The word he came up with was honest. “I thought both sets of players were honest,” he said. He could have meant that for anybody to have taken a goal would have been theft. In other fields of artistic endeavour the afternoon’s work can be described as minimalist. While not a lot happened, it held the eye for fear of missing any small item of significance. Threats of a disturbing sight as vulgar as a bulging net came most ominously from a big helping of free kicks close to goal. Half a dozen were shared just outside the penalty box. But in terms of gross profit all they produced was a nifty high stop by St Johnstone’s Andy Rhodes from a finger-tingling scorcher of a drive by Paul McLaughlin.

Several individual performances were easy to watch. While failing to add up to anything much it wasn’t the more gifted players bid as the way that they did it. Thistle conspicuously offered the elegance of David Irons and some electric bursts by George Shaw. Paul Kinnaird’s persistance was admirable. When he tried one ploy that failed, he immediately attempted another even if it looked more likely to do the same. St Johnstone’s construction of a treble defensive line is built for security and not excitement. But it released Paul Deas and Kevin McGowne to gallop from full back in a most exhilarating manner. Young Deas comes on in bounds.

For the first 20 minutes, St Johnstone looked commanding. They harnessed the wind to pump the ball forward in happy little loops like a game on the seashore. McClelland’s sturdy distribution was especially neat. At that early stage, Paul Wright looked like a goal waiting to happen, if not several goals. If he had a fault, it seemed to be that he was going too far back to fetch the ball instead of waiting up to fire it. But if St Johnstone slowed to the pace of Thistle — who may have had enough excitement for one week — Wright’s running hither and yon seemed less and less a misuse of his energy. For all his incisive scoring skills he looks a better player the busier he is. Near the end he struck a post after he received a crisp little chip from John Davies. On another day he would have deserved to score but in Saturday’s circumstances a goal, in all honesty, was out of order.
