A goal from Farningham (80) when he headed in a Kinnaird cross won it but it should have been more emphatic. Stout defending and the woodwork saved St Johnstone from a heavier defeat. Shaw hit the bar, Britton the post. Kinnaird was in fine form and it was probably his best game for the club.

RAY FARNINGHAM savoured his dramatic late winner for Thistle then singled out his irrepressible boss John Lambie for praise: “He is unlike any other manager I know - and I have played under Tommy McLean, Doug Houston, Archie Knox and Jim Leishman. John Lambie is a one-off. Before a match he never tries to bamboozle you with tactics unlike some other managers. We just go out there, do our own thing and if the boss is not happy with the way things are going at half-time he tells us so.”

John Lambie has his own style of management and while his ways are different it seems to be working. Saturday’s victory at fun-packed Firhill lifted Thistle into fifth place, three points behind second-top Celtic. The scoreline flattered Saints who were a shadow of their former selves. Farningham sent in a downward header in 79 minutes which bounced off the ground and flew over Andy Rhodes hands and into the net. The goal hero said: “Until that goal came I thought it was going to be one of those days but, to be honest, we could have won by five or six goals.”

Lambie has brought an exciting new dimension into the Premier League. His language is always colourful, he speaks his mind and is a natural motivator of players. Lambie said: “We have surprised a lot of people, but it’s all down to hard work”. It’s all been done on a limited budget - Willie Jamieson, Don McVicar Albert Craig and the tricky Paul Kinnaird were signed on frees, but perhaps the best thing Lambie has done is move Davie Irons from midfield to defence. The transformation has been amazing and Lambie said: “People can laugh if they want but here is a player who could play for Scotland.” Saints boss Alex Totten said: “Thistle are doing what St Johnstone did when we came into the Premier League there’s a newness a freshness about them.”
