Dundee scored (7) but it was a personal triumph for Shaw (close in, 22, and again, 37, poked the ball through the keeper's legs, 51 and a pen 57). Dundee did break up field to make it 2-2 (38) and 4-3 (74) but an og (79) and Britton's deflected shot (88) completed a memorable match. Revenge for 16 Nov 1991.

Magyars still in the Pink if not on the front page… ON the day the Evening Times printed its last Pink the date was inscribed in the club calendar of Partick Thistle in letters of red. Their 6-3 beating of Dundee made them again the Maryhill Magyars. This found appellation was attached to them by the marvellous Malcolm Munro, a Pink scrivener of yore and Firhill devotee. His intention was to put the Jags on an equal pedestal with the Hungarian team that included Puskas and Hidegkuti. Other hallowed enshrined in the souvenir Pink included McQuade, Coulston, Bone, Rae, and Lawrie. Alongside them in Partick’s parthenon has been enrolled George Shaw, who scored four of Saturday’s six. With one from a penalty, three arrived from such close range that the small Shavian was just about inside the goalie’s jersey of Jim Leighton. Such productivity earned for the club a sponsor’s bonus of £15,000 for a hat trick awarded by a car telephone firm. They might have had to give Shaw the company if he had scored five as he nearly did.

After two goals each in a pell-mell first half the match seemed to turn on a visionary pass by Bobby Law. When he found Don McVicar on the far touchline, the ball was returned across the face of the goal. “If I was two inches taller I would have got it,” reckoned Shaw, who is 5ft 7in. Thistle’s heady total was completed through an own goal by Gary Paterson that was more Leighton’s mistake, and a bright drive a couple of minutes from the end by Gerry Britton.

John Lambie, the Firhill manager, conceded that he was elated, but only 99.9%. Having tried for Kevin Ratcliffe (who was in Dundee’s team), Graham Roberts, and Terry Butcher, he bemoaned the continuing lack of a canny defender, although two such imports would be better. To applaud his existing personnel he said: “I can’t believe some of the things I’m seeing. They are showing skills they never knew they had.”

Scoring three away goals and still being cuffed could be a hard blow for Dundee to shake. Some key players, conspicuously Graham Rix, were drained early by the frenzied pace. Billy Dodds had two of their goals, including the first of the game, while Ian Gilzean took the middle one. With its customary appalling deftness the Pink headed its report: Shaw Hits Jagpot. In memory of Malky Munro, a protest is hereby lodged that an epic local story failed to appear on the front page to make an historic edition doubly so.
