AET. Lost 3-4 on pens. Saints raced to a 2-goal lead (pen, 5) and following a free-kick (a handled 50:50 ball deemed a pass-back). A close-range header by Britton then Shaw from close in made it 2-2 just before half-time. Thistle had a good second half but Britton missed a pen (112) so it was on to penalties and defeat.

ST JOHNSTONE eventually won through to a Skol Cup quarter-final meeting at Kilmarnock after a pulsating night in Perth which ended in a penalty shoot-out. The crowd got their money’s worth, two spot kicks before the shoot-out, seven bookings, and an amazing fightback. But Thistle must be wondering how they failed to win in normal time.

The game got off to an explosive start when Curran dispossessed Clark, then rounded McVicar, who brought him down inside the box, and Paul Wright made no mistake from the spot. But it was Partick who came to life after this set-back, and it was against the run of play when Saints went two ahead in 33 minutes. Bobby Law’s interception was gathered by the keeper and was deemed to be an illegal passback. From the free kick inside the box, Curran tapped to Wright, whose shot was deflected to Sean McAuley, who scored. Then, as Saints seemed to be coasting to a 2-0 interval lead, they suddenly found themselves level. Gerry Britton scored with a header from a Kinnaird cross after 44 minutes, and Thistle equalised just on the break when McVicar’s throw-in found George Shaw, who scored with a header.

The second half may have been goalless but it was no less eventful. Thistle dominated it entirely, a fact illustrated by four Saints being booked – McGinnis, Baltacha, McClelland, and Curran. Thistle substitute Kinnaird also was yellow carded for a foul on Wright.

Saints looked more determined in extra time, and it was the turn of Thistle players to go into the book — Law and McVicar. McClelland then brought down Britton inside the box in 112 minutes, but the ex -Celtic player missed his spot kick when keeper Andy Rhodes saved it. Then came the penalty shootout, and the writing was on the wall for Thistle when McVicar and McWalter missed their first two kicks, leaving Saints to win 4 -3 on penalties.
