The winner came from an opportunist goal by Irons (47) with the Airdrie defence dithering and he hit the post later on. Quiet game. 5 bookings.

A central role gives Cameron new lease of life…

IAN Cameron had to ask where the exit was at Firhill on Saturday evening. A few hours earlier many in Airdrie’s kit would have been chuffed to supply this gen to the former Aberdeen player just to see the back of him, for his performance against them for Partick Thistle in the opening premier division match of the season was, for most, a pleasure to behold. The player had just threaded his way through Firhill’s inner sanctum to discuss his afternoon’s work, and after politely bidding the assembled media goodnight, appeared to temporarily lose his bearings. No such loss, however, was in evidence on the turf as Cameron displayed his wares in such a fashion as to prove to all present that if a player is instructed to perform in a position that is not distasteful, much more good will be forthcoming from him. Cameron explained that his last employer requested him to play wide on the left, a position with which he held little regard. But now in the famous red and yellow of Thistle, he has been given a more central role which, on Saturday’s performance, is distinctly more suitable. Invariably when the ball was delivered to Cameron’s toes in that area of the field where, as a rule, tackling can be a little less dignified, he would feint one way or hold the ball up before releasing a telling pass to a colleague, and in general he made his opponents’ afternoon somewhat uncomfortable.

John Lambie, the Thistle manager, looked well pleased with the 1-0 success, stating that a good start was imperative if his club were not to fulfil the prophecy of many so-called experts, and bring up the rear when the league race had run its course. “Our pre-season work was a shambles,” he said, “but this win will give the whole place a lift and be a big boost to the players’ confidence.” Self belief, after the ball had been rolling for more than 20 minutes, was a commodity which the home defenders did not appear to lack, and Grant Tierney, who for much of the promotion campaign earned his wages playing reserve team football, and his fellow defenders seldom gave Airdrie’s eager attackers much to get excited about. The highlight of the proceedings, except for those bedecked in red and white, came just following the interval when Gary Peebles, whose play seemed to benefit from Cameron’s promptings throughout the afternoon, strode forward, and while the Airdrie defenders dithered, slipped the ball to Davie Irons, who whacked it past John Martin, causing much ado among the home support.

Airdrie, whom last season many thought guilty of disagreeable and harsh behaviour, went about their business in the proper manner, and appeared to have grounds for dismay when Alan Lawrence belted the ball past Craig Nelson in the opening spell, only for the player to turn and see that a team-mate had wandered into an offside position. Alex MacDonald, the Airdrie manager, has a collection of honest grafters on the payroll, but perhaps a little more creativity to aid the toil and sweat will have to be found to lighten their burden in the long months ahead. As for Thistle, Dundee United’s visit on Wednesday evening can’t come too soon.
