Thistle started cautiously and Watson was badly injured (out until November). They opened up and played some fine football. Typically, they fell behind just before half-time (a header from a corner by future-JAG Kennedy). They matched Premier League Motherwell but one piece of slack marking cost them and they lacked a finish.
