Field Mill is the oldest ground in the Football League, hosting football since 1861, although some reports date it back as far as 1850. John Marr came on as a sub in 118 mins, specifically to take a shoot-out penalty. It was saved!

AGG: 3-3. AET. Lost 1-3 on pens. Somner scored (11) but Rough gifted Mansfield an equaliser (46). Melrose restored the lead (48) but a pen (75) and the winner on the night (86) took it to ET and pens. Mansfield had to substitute their keeper (65) and his fine saves (and poor penalties) saw them through.

Partick Thistle’s bid to reach the semi-final stage of the Anglo-Scottish Cup failed dismally at Field Mill last night when they surrendered a first-leg lead then were eliminated after a penalty kick shoot out. The final showdown was a nightmare for the Firhill side in general and Scotland’s World Cup goalkeeper in particular. He had looked particularly at fault with Mansfield’s opener, then he had to watch in anguish as Town’s substitute ‘keeper took them into the semi-final. Mansfield cracked home three of their spot kicks but McAdam and Houston, who had done much to keep Mansfield at bay, both added to Partick’s disaster by hitting their efforts wide. [ET reports that McAdam was the only one who scored!]

Town’s reserve team ‘keeper Martin New, who came on as substitute in 65 minutes for the injured Roy Arnold, was the toast of Mansfield. He pulled off two tremendous saves at point-blank range in extra time then kept out efforts from Doug Somner and John Marr in the penalty decider. Yet it all started so well for Thistle. They added to their initial advantage when Doug Somner scored in Partick’s first excursion to the Mansfileld penalty area in 11 minutes. Even when teenager Gary Saxby was gifted a goal by Alan Rough a minute inside the second half, Thistle still looked in control, especially after Jim Melrose replied within two minutes. But Mansfield kept battling away and the Scots conceded a penalty which Goodwin converted four minutes from time [note: other reports say this was 75 mins and that Goodwin further scored a normal goal on 86] to set the scene for the penalty decider.
