Had Motherwell pressed home their early advantage there should have been no need for a replay. Thistle came from behind to draw level twice and after a shaky start finished the better team. Motherwell took the lead in 7 minutes and Campbell had his work to do to prevent them from going further ahead. McFarlane equalised for Thistle but the lead didn't last long and it was 2-1 at half-time. Salisbury got Thistle's 2nd goal and Motherwell's hopes of a win were dashed.
