This was reported as “one of the dullest cup ties imaginable“ (SC). Defences were on top throughout this match and the keepers had little to do. McMenemy was outstanding but he had little support. 'The SP felt that “real cup tie football was played“. All the midfield energy spent in creating chances was wasted as neither team could make much impression on stout defences. “The display of Campbell, Harris and McMullan was a redeeming feature of a commonplace game“ (GH). 4 consecutive 0-0 draws in league and cup told their own story.
