Motherwell opened with a win yesterday at Fir Park, where they had Partick Thistle as their guests in a charity game. There were some fine passages in a game in which the Fir Parkers dominated throughout. Ferrier opened well for Partick, and he, Whittle, Gray and Marshall were quite the pick of the visiting forwards. It was pretty well on in the first half ere a count came, and Rankine was Motherwell’s marksman with a fast, low drive which gave Neil no chance. Morgan opened well, but an early injury spoiled his usefulness, and he retired at half-time with his side leading by the odd goal. The second-half opened with some nice wing work on the part of Whittle and Gray, with an occasional sparkler from Ferrier. Rankine was the wizard of the day, however, and his practical touch augurs well for Motherwell in the new season. Bennet came on in Morgan’s place. Hugh Ferguson was eager to score, and it was an effort of his which put his club two up in the second period. A breakaway by the Thistle gave Marshall an opportunity, and he beat Craig in good style. Near the end Ferguson had desperately hard lines. It was a good game, and the score fairly reflected the run of things. Motherwell’s new players gave satisfaction.
