teamline notes
  • Teamlines per ET, OH concurs.
  • ET reports that Thistle were having difficulty in fielding an eleven and so the Scottish Amateurs (a flexible outfit closely associated with, but distinct from Queen's Park) generously offered the services of "Sinclair" (No.2 for Thistle) and "Smillie" (No.11 for Thistle). "Smillie" (per text) becomes "Smellie" in the actual line-up. He's listed as Smellie in the SR report. With such a unique name, and pre-established connections with Willie, we feel this can only be Robert 'Bob' Smellie the internationalist. JL lists him at QP between 1884 and 1904, the only player there with such a name. Bob and Willie played alongside each other for both Queen's Park and Scotland in the late 80s and early 90s, and the pair seem to have developed a friendly and long-lasting bond, for Bob also turned out for Willie's first testimonial (31-May-1895) as part of a Glasgow Select side.
